The reassuring part is that a dryer not heating almost always comes down to one of a handful of faults, and most are fixable in a single visit, usually for less than people expect. Here’s what typically causes it and what you can safely check before booking.
The most common reasons a dryer won’t heat up
A failed heating element
This is the classic one. The element is what actually warms the air, and when it burns out the drum keeps turning but no heat is produced, so clothes come out no drier than they went in. On most vented and condenser dryers a failed element is one of the most common heating faults. The element is matched to your specific model, so we usually order it in and fit it on a quick return once it arrives.
A tripped thermal cut-out or faulty thermostat
Dryers have safety thermostats and a thermal cut-out that shut off the heat if things get too hot, often because airflow has been restricted. Once one trips or fails, you get a dryer that runs cold. We test the whole heating circuit to find whether it’s the thermostat itself or the underlying airflow issue that tripped it.
Blocked lint filters and vents
A clogged lint filter or blocked vent restricts airflow, so the dryer either takes forever to dry or overheats and cuts its own heat out as a safety measure. It’s the most preventable cause on the list, and a blocked airflow path is a fire-safety issue as much as a performance one, so it’s always worth clearing.
A tired heat-pump system
On newer heat-pump dryers there’s no traditional element, so weak or no heat can point to the heat-pump circuit, a sensor fault, or a condenser that needs attention. These energy-efficient models are worth diagnosing properly rather than replacing, and we service them alongside vented and condenser types.
Overheating and tripping the power
If your dryer heats but then trips the power or shuts down partway through, that’s a safety concern, usually a clogged airflow path or a faulty thermostat. We treat overheating faults as a priority and make the dryer safe as well as working again before we leave.
What you can safely check yourself
- Turn it off at the wall before you touch or clear anything inside or around the vent.
- Clean the lint filter thoroughly, it’s the single most common cause of poor drying and overheating.
- Check the vent hose and outlet for lint build-up or kinks that could be choking the airflow.
- Make sure the dryer isn’t set to an air-dry or cool cycle rather than a heated one.
- Give the dryer room to breathe and ventilate, especially if it’s tucked in a cupboard or tight laundry.
- If it still won’t heat after clearing the airflow, call a technician rather than running it cold or overheating.
When to call a technician
If the lint filter and vent are clear and the dryer still runs cold, it’s a heating-circuit fault that needs testing on site, the element, the thermostats or the thermal cut-out.
