A dryer that runs but won't dry, takes forever, or trips the power is almost always fixable, and usually cheaper than people expect. We repair vented, condenser and heat-pump dryers from every major brand, and we'll also check it's venting and running safely before we leave.
Common dryer faults we fix
- Runs but no heat — Usually not a broken part at all. A blocked filter or clogged condenser stops the airflow and trips the heater’s thermostat. We clear the blockages and reset it; a genuinely failed element is rare. If one is needed, we quote it first. Full guide: why a dryer won’t heat.
- Takes too long to dry — Blocked lint filters and vents, a worn heater element, or a tired heat-pump system reducing efficiency.
- Drum won't turn — A snapped drive belt, seized idler pulley or failed motor. Belts are a common, quick fix.
- Overheating or tripping power — Rare, and usually safe. Typically the fan has stopped, so the heater stays on and trips the safety thermostat, which is exactly what that safety is there to do. We find why the fan stopped and fix it.
- Noisy or squealing — Worn drum rollers, bearings or belt tensioner. We replace the worn parts so it runs quietly again.
What to expect from a dryer repair
How we diagnose it
A dryer that runs but will not dry is nearly always a heating or airflow fault. We test the element, thermostats and thermal cut-outs, check the vent and lint path for restriction, and on heat-pump models check the condenser and sensors. Overheating faults we treat as a safety priority.

We can usually fix the fault on-site with the common parts we carry; where a part like a heating element needs matching to your model, we quote it first and book a quick return once it arrives. We also make sure it is venting and running safely before we leave, since a blocked airflow path is both a performance and a fire-safety issue.
Repair or replace?
Heating and belt or roller repairs are cost-effective on most dryers. On an older heat-pump model with a failing sealed system we will weigh it up with you, but the majority of dryer faults are well worth fixing.
What a dryer repair costs. Every visit starts with a $129 diagnostic ($169 further out) that covers the trip and finding the real fault. If you go ahead, the diagnostic is the first line of your repair price: you’ve already paid it, so you only pay the balance. You never pay it twice. Most dryer faults aren't a broken part, they're maintenance. A blocked filter or a clogged condenser stops the air moving, and without airflow a dryer simply won't dry. A genuine part failure is pretty rare, so the first thing I check is airflow: filters clear, condenser or heat exchanger clear.
Vented, condenser and heat-pump dryers all work differently. A vented dryer is simple, an element and a fan. A condenser draws the moisture out with heat. A heat-pump dryer is the most efficient by far, but it's the slowest, and if the heat pump itself fails it gets expensive. For pure drying performance I still lean toward vented and condenser dryers.
On heaters: vented dryers always have one; condenser and heat-pump dryers sometimes have an auxiliary heater. I don't carry heaters on the van, mainly because they rarely fail. A lot of 'no heat' calls come good in a single visit just by resetting the thermostat and clearing the blockages that tripped it. And lint is the big one, clean the filter every cycle and the condenser every few cycles. It builds up fast, and it's behind most of the faults I'm called out for.

Common dryer faults we see in Wollongong homes
- “It runs but the clothes come out cold” — Most of the time not a broken part at all: a filter that has not been cleaned, a condenser choked with lint, and a thermostat that has tripped to protect the machine. We clear the blockages, reset the thermostat and test it through a cycle. A genuine element failure is rare — we do not even carry heaters on the van for that reason — and if one is needed it is quoted first.
- “It takes two or three cycles to dry a load” — Airflow, almost every time. Filters, the condenser or heat exchanger, and on a vented dryer the duct to outside. Without air moving through it many times a minute a dryer simply cannot dry. Beachside units in Wollongong and Warilla with a long vent run behind the wall are the classic case.
- “There are black marks on the washing” — The drum rollers have worn and the drum is rubbing. Customers have told us they thought the dryer was possessed. Rollers are an inexpensive part and a one-visit fix, with a clean-out while the machine is open.
- “It squeals” or “the drum won’t turn” — A worn belt, tired rollers or a drum bearing, and on some machines a failed motor capacitor. Belts and rollers are cheap; we will tell you honestly if it is the motor on an old machine.
- “It smells hot” or it trips the power — Very rare, and safer than it sounds: usually the fan has stopped turning, so the heater stays on until the built-in thermostat cuts it. We treat overheating as a priority visit, replace the fan or motor, and make sure the airflow is clear so it does not happen again.
- Heat-pump dryers that leave loads damp — The sealed condenser and evaporator clog with lint over time, or a sensor fails. A proper clean of the heat exchanger and a sensor test usually restores drying. If the heat pump itself has failed on an older machine, that is the one dryer repair we will often advise against.

How long does a dryer repair take?
Most dryer repairs are done in a single visit — we can usually diagnose and fix the fault on-site. If your model needs a specific part we don’t carry, we quote it first, then order it in and book a short return.
Do you keep dryer heating elements on hand?
No, and honestly they rarely fail. Vented dryers always have a heater; condenser and heat-pump dryers sometimes have an auxiliary one. Most ‘no heat’ faults are actually a tripped thermostat from a blockage, which we reset and clear on the spot. If a heater genuinely needs replacing, we quote it and order it in.
How do I keep my dryer working well?
Clean the lint filter every cycle, and the condenser or heat exchanger every few cycles. Lint builds up fast, and poor airflow is behind most dryer faults, so a well-maintained dryer rarely gives trouble.
