Opening the fridge to find it warmer than it should be is one of those faults you can’t leave for the weekend, not with a full fridge of food on the line. The good news is that a fridge not cooling almost always comes down to one of a handful of faults, and most are fixable in a single visit. Before you write off the whole unit, it’s worth knowing what usually causes it and what’s safe to check yourself.
The most common reasons a fridge stops cooling
A faulty thermostat or evaporator fan
If the light comes on but the fridge is running warm, the problem is usually cooling rather than power. A failed thermostat can stop the fridge calling for cold air, and a seized or failed evaporator fan motor stops that cold air moving from the freezer section into the fridge compartment. It’s a very common fault, and on most models it’s an economical fix.
Condenser coils choked with dust
The coils at the back or underneath shed heat from the system. When they’re packed with dust and pet hair, the fridge can’t dump that heat and struggles to hold temperature, running warm and running constantly. It’s especially common with garage-kept fridges. Cleaning the coils sometimes restores cooling on its own.
A blocked defrost system
If your freezer is icing up while the fridge below stays warm, the defrost system is the usual suspect. A failed defrost heater or timer lets frost build over the evaporator until it blocks airflow, so cold air can’t reach the fridge section. A perished door seal letting warm, moist air in makes it worse.

A door seal that’s cracked, torn or no longer gripping lets warm air leak in constantly. The fridge fights it by running longer and harder, and you’ll often notice condensation or the motor never seeming to switch off. Seals are one of the tidier, cheaper fixes.
A sealed-system or compressor fault
Less often, no cooling points to the sealed refrigeration circuit itself, a struggling compressor or a refrigerant leak. This is the specialised, licensed end of fridge repair, and on an older unit it’s where we’ll give you the straight numbers on repair versus replacement so you’re not spending good money after bad.
What you can safely check yourself
- Turn it off at the wall for a moment, then back on, and listen for the compressor and fans kicking in.
- Check the temperature dial or display hasn’t been knocked to a warmer setting or an off/defrost mode.
- Make sure the fridge isn’t overpacked and that vents inside aren’t blocked by food stopping air circulating.
- Run a hand around the door seal for gaps, and check the door is closing squarely and not being held ajar by a shelf or drawer.
- Pull the fridge out and vacuum the condenser coils at the back or underneath if they’re thick with dust.
- If it still isn’t cooling after all that, call a technician rather than leaving it running warm with food inside.
When to call a technician
If the basics check out and the fridge is still warm, it’s time for a proper on-site diagnosis. Cooling faults from the thermostat, evaporator fan, defrost system and sealed circuit can all present the same way, so it takes testing each stage to find the real cause. Our call-out fee is $100 for jobs close in across the Illawarra, or $150 for further out, and it covers travel and inspecting your fridge.
