A washing machine that fills and washes but won’t drain is one of the most common calls we get across Wollongong and the Illawarra — and the good news is it’s usually one of a handful of faults, most of them fixable in a single visit. Here’s what’s normally going on, what you can safely check yourself, and when it’s worth calling a technician.
The most common reasons a washing machine won’t drain
1. A blocked pump filter
This is the number-one cause, and the one most people don’t know about. Most front loaders have a small lint filter (often behind a flap at the bottom-front of the machine) that catches coins, hair clips, buttons and lint. When it clogs, the water can’t get out. Clearing it fixes a surprising number of “won’t drain” faults.
2. A kinked or blocked drain hose
The hose at the back can kink behind the machine or get partially blocked with sludge or a stray sock. If it’s crushed against the wall or looping the wrong way, water backs up.
3. A failed drain pump
If the filter and hose are clear, the drain pump itself may have failed or jammed — sometimes on a small object that’s slipped past the filter. You’ll often hear it humming or buzzing without actually moving water. This is a genuine repair rather than a DIY fix.
4. A door-lock or control fault keeping it “stuck”
On some machines a faulty door interlock or a control-board fault will stop the drain and spin steps entirely, and can leave the door locked shut with water inside. If yours is throwing an error code, that’s usually where the real story is.
What you can safely check yourself
- Turn the machine off at the wall before you do anything.
- Have a towel and a shallow tray ready — there will be water.
- Open the filter flap (bottom-front on most front loaders), unscrew the filter slowly and clear any debris.
- Pull the machine out and check the drain hose isn’t kinked or crushed.
- Run a short rinse/spin cycle to see if it drains.
If it drains after clearing the filter — great, you’ve fixed it. If it still won’t drain, hums without pumping, or the door stays locked, it’s time to stop and call someone before you flood the laundry.
When to call a technician
If the filter and hose are clear and it still won’t drain, the fault is usually the pump, the door lock or the control board — all of which need proper diagnosis and the right part.
