Your dryer might not get the same attention as your fridge or washing machine, but it plays a big role in your day-to-day routine. And when it stops working — or worse, becomes a fire hazard — it’s a real problem.
At Snap Repairs, we fix dryers all the time, and in most cases, a bit of regular maintenance could’ve prevented the issue. So here are 7 easy tips to keep your dryer running safely and efficiently:
1. Clean the Lint Filter Every Time
This one’s non-negotiable. After every load, pull out the lint filter and give it a good clean. A blocked lint filter makes your dryer work harder, slows down drying, and increases the risk of overheating (or even a fire).
2. Check the Vent Hose
The vent hose carries hot air and moisture outside. If it’s kinked, crushed, or clogged with lint, your dryer won’t work efficiently — and it can overheat. Check it regularly, and make sure it’s short, straight, and clean.
3. Deep Clean the Vent System
At least once a year (or more if you use your dryer heavily), disconnect the vent hose and give it a deep clean. Use a vacuum or dryer vent cleaning kit to remove built-up lint inside the hose and exterior vent.
4. Don’t Overload It
Cramming your dryer full of wet clothes might seem like a time-saver, but it actually takes longer to dry and strains the motor and drum. Stick to recommended load sizes — your clothes and your dryer will thank you.
5. Wipe the Moisture Sensor
Many dryers use a sensor to detect when clothes are dry. If it gets coated in residue from dryer sheets or fabric softener, it can misread the moisture level and stop too early (or keep going too long). Wipe the sensor bar with a damp cloth every few weeks.
6. Keep the Area Around the Dryer Clean
Dust, lint, and even pet hair can build up behind and under your dryer. Every few months, pull it out (carefully), vacuum underneath, and check for anything blocking the vent or motor.
7. Listen for Unusual Sounds
Squeaking, banging, or thumping noises could mean worn-out belts, rollers, or bearings. Catching these early can save you from bigger (and more expensive) repairs down the track.
